abstract = "Brazils current policy on forest concessions in public forests in
the Amazon region, together with the recent creation of
Sustainable Forest Districts (SFDs), makes monitoring necessary
that is specifically designed for detection of selective logging.
The objective of present study was to monitor selective timber
exploitation in the sustainable forest district proposed for the
region of influence of the BR-319 (Manaus-Porto Velho) Highway. A
total of 53 scenes obtained by the Landsat-TM sensor were
interpreted visually for the years 2008 and 2009. The delimitation
of the areas under exploitation was carried out using the
soil-fraction image derived from a linear spectral mixture model
and from the color composite image obtained from the soil,
vegetation and shade fraction images. The results permitted us to
observe that the existing timber-exploitation activity in the
BR-319 SFD is concentrated near to the state capitals of Porto
Velho (Rondonia State) and Rio Branco (Acre State). This is
probably due to infrastructure (especially roads) being more
developed in these regions than elsewhere. Selective logging areas
were not observed in Conservation Units (CUs) in the integral
protection category in the BR-319 SFD, nor was logging observed in
indigenous lands. Logging activity was concentrated in CUs in the
sustainable use category under state management at both dates
analyzed. This fact could be due to greater effectiveness of the
integral protection CUs in restraining the expansion of
deforestation and of forest degradation caused by illegal
                         selective logging.",
